Arkansas Governor

In 1996, Huckabee was sworn in as Arkansas governor when incumbent governor Jim Guy Tucker resigned due to fraud and conspiracy charges. In 1998, he was elected to a full four-year term, and in 2002, he defeated State Treasurer Jimmie Lou Fisher for a second term. Huckabee garnered a lot of acclaim for his rapid reaction to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was even rated one of the best five governors in the nation by Time Magazine. However, he was chastised for a number of concerns, including a large number of pardons and commutations he granted during his tenure, as well as the expanding size of state prisons and the number of persons executed while he was in office. Huckabee has the third-longest term of any Arkansas governor when his term ended in 2007.

Presidential Campaigns

In 2007, Huckabee declared his presidential campaign on “Meet the Press.” With roughly 18 per cent of the vote in the Iowa Straw Poll, he came in second. He received support from a number of religious activists in November of 2007. There were a lot of backlashes, including condemnation for a previous remark he made about converting the United States into a Christian theocracy. In January of that year, Huckabee received 34% of the vote in the Iowa Republican caucuses. He won in Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia on Super Tuesday, but Senator John McCain remained the favourite. When it became evident that he would lose Texas in March 2008, Huckabee dropped out of the campaign.

Huckabee declared his desire to run for President of the United States in the 2016 election in May of 2015. However, following a poor showing in the Iowa caucuses in 2016, he decided to put his candidacy on hold.

Political Positions

Huckabee is a devout Christian who opposes progressive policies including abortion financing, universal health care, gun control, and LGBTQ and immigration rights.
