Early Life and Career Beginnings

Mike Huckabee was born to working-class parents Mae, a gas company clerk, and Dorsey, a mechanic and firefighter, in Hope, Arkansas, in 1955. He has one sister, Pat, and is of German, English, and Scots-Irish origin. At the age of 14, Huckabee obtained his first job reading the news and weather for a local radio station. During the 1972-1973 school year, he was president of the student council at Hope High School. Huckabee began his preaching at Garrett Memorial Baptist Church in 1972. He went on to Ouachita Baptist University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in religion in 1978. After that, Huckabee attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, but left out after a year to pursue a career in Christian radio.

Huckabee began working for infamous televangelist James Robison when he was 21 years old. He was a pastor at Immanuel Baptist Church in Pine Bluff from 1980 to 1986, and at Beech Street First Baptist Church in Texarkana from 1986 to 1992.

Start of Political Career

In 1992, Huckabee ran for lieutenant governor of Arkansas but was defeated by incumbent Democratic senator Dale Bumpers. He did, however, win the main election the next year, becoming just the second Republican lieutenant governor of Arkansas since Reconstruction. Huckabee was re-elected to a full term in 1994.

Arkansas Governor

In 1996, Huckabee was sworn in as Arkansas governor when incumbent governor Jim Guy Tucker resigned due to fraud and conspiracy charges. In 1998, he was elected to a full four-year term, and in 2002, he defeated State Treasurer Jimmie Lou Fisher for a second term. Huckabee garnered a lot of acclaim for his rapid reaction to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was even rated one of the best five governors in the nation by Time Magazine. However, he was chastised for a number of concerns, including a large number of pardons and commutations he granted during his tenure, as well as the expanding size of state prisons and the number of persons executed while he was in office. Huckabee has the third-longest term of any Arkansas governor when his term ended in 2007.

Presidential Campaigns

In 2007, Huckabee declared his presidential campaign on “Meet the Press.” With roughly 18 per cent of the vote in the Iowa Straw Poll, he came in second. He received support from a number of religious activists in November of 2007. There were a lot of backlashes, including condemnation for a previous remark he made about converting the United States into a Christian theocracy. In January of that year, Huckabee received 34% of the vote in the Iowa Republican caucuses. He won in Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia on Super Tuesday, but Senator John McCain remained the favourite. When it became evident that he would lose Texas in March 2008, Huckabee dropped out of the campaign.

Huckabee declared his desire to run for President of the United States in the 2016 election in May of 2015. However, following a poor showing in the Iowa caucuses in 2016, he decided to put his candidacy on hold.

Political Positions

Huckabee is a devout Christian who opposes progressive policies including abortion financing, universal health care, gun control, and LGBTQ and immigration rights. He rejects evolution as a science and blames the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy on a lack of Christian instruction. Following President Joe Biden’s victory in 2020, Huckabee continued to spread the falsehood that the election was rigged.
