Career

NBC News hired Russert as a correspondent covering youth issues as part of its coverage of the 2008 presidential election in August 2008, only a month after his graduation from Boston College and a month after his father’s death.

He was given the responsibility of covering both the Democratic and Republican conventions. His election night piece, which looked at how Barack Obama’s victory affected young people, helped NBC win a News & Documentary Emmy for its 2008 Election Night coverage.

Luke has openly acknowledged that critics in the media, including some colleagues, have accused him of unqualified nepotism because he had virtually no professional experience at the time of his hiring. He worked as a Congressional correspondent for NBC News on Capitol Hill from May 2009 to July 2016, covering the House of Representatives. In 2010, he made headlines when he received a public apology from Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee at the time.

Velazquez was wrongfully condemned to life in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. The show was nominated for a News & Documentary Emmy for Best Report in a News Magazine.

In July 2016, Russert abruptly resigned from NBC, citing a desire to assess his career options. Russert is interested in charitable causes that his late father supported. He became the host of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington’s annual Congressional luncheon on April 20th, 2010, which was renamed after his father.
