In the annual Q1 conference in 2022, Universal Music Group confirmed that it had signed Drake to the terms of a “long-term worldwide partnership” the agreement included the entire spectrum of “recorded music to music publishing, film, television and brands.” Drake has referenced the deal in a couple of songs. In one track, he sang about signing a contract that was accompanied by “360 upfront.” With the confirmation of Universal that the deal was signed, some have taken this lyric as meaning that the deal was worth $360 million upfront. Some sources have put the worth of the deal at around $400 million or more. In the time prior to the signing date, Drake’s catalogue alone was generating 50 million dollars in revenue per year for its company.
If the deal were valued at $400 million then after taxes, Drake could theoretically have been given $200 million as a cash payment prior to taxation.

Aubrey Drake Graham on October 24 of 1996 in Toronto, Canada. Drake’s father Dennis was a drummer and played with famous musicians such as Jerry Lee Lewis during his career. The mother of Drake, Sandra, also known as Sandi worked as an English instructor and also a florist. Drake was a student at a Jewish Day School and was able to attend an official Bar Mitzvah celebration.
Sandi Dennis and Sandi Dennis divorced at the age of Aubrey aged five. The father then relocated to Memphis and he eventually was arrested and detained for several years for drug-related charges. Aubrey lived at home with her mother in Toronto however he did visit his dad in Memphis each in the heat of summer (when his father wasn’t in prison). Drake later referred to Dennis as having been absent throughout his early years, claims Dennis has repeatedly denied and claims were made to promote records.
From the sixth grade onwards, Drake and his mom resided in the bottom part of a townhouse with two stories. home in a suburb of affluence known as Forest Hill. His mom was on the ground floor was street level, and Drake resided on the lower level. They weren’t wealthy and their finances were very tight.
When he was at Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, Drake discovered an interest in singing and acting. Drake later went to Vaughan Road Academy where he was targeted for his religion and race. He was unable to attend for a while and then graduated in 2012.
Personal Life
Drake was involved in a variety of notable relationships throughout his career. He was in a relationship with Rihanna from time to time between 2009 and 2016. He later described Rihana to be ” the woman I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old.“

While Drake was on Degrassi his mother fell sick and was unable to work. Drake’s Degrassi paychecks were their sole source of income for a few years. In the beginning, he was making $50,000 per year in wages on the television show. It was about 2000 dollars per month, after-tax. Then he would describe the time frame as follows:
” My mother was very sick. We were very poor, like broke. The only money I had coming in was off of Canadian TV.“
Music Career
Inspiring by rap icons such as Jay-Z who signed record contracts after achieving success independently, Aubrey – who by now was going by the”middle name “Drake” as his stage name – began to release mixtapes in the year 2006.
In February 2005, he launched his debut mixtape “Room for Improvement” via his website and his official MySpace page. The mixtape was sold out to thousands of copies in one go. The second mixtape he released was, “Comeback Season”, in the year following. The mixtape was released by his label, which was recently launched by Octopus’ Very Own (aka OVO Records). The mixtape included the most popular underground track “Replacement Girl”. The music video for the track was the first music video by the unsigned Canadian rapper to be aired on BET. The song’s first version included a spliced version of the track “Man of the Year” by Brisco, Flo Rida and Lil Wayne.

Young Money Entertainment
Contrary to what you might think, Drake had not signed on to Wayne’s record label until this point. Drake released a mixtape titled, “So Far Gone” in 2009. The mixtape was released as a download for free through the OVO website. The mixtape included appearances by Lil Wayne, Lloyd, Trey Songz, Omarion and Bun B. After receiving a download of 2000 times in its first 24 hours, the album was eventually declared Gold from the RIAA and peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The mixtape eventually came out as an EP that was released at the number 6 spot on the Billboard 200 and won the 2010 Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year.
Drake was still an independent artist. Drake was highly sought-after in the industry of music. The bidding war led to several labels trying to sign Drake. The desperate situation was called “the biggest bidding war in music history” although this isn’t confirmed.
In June 2009 Drake signed a deal in partnership with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment. The contract was part of a joint venture that was a partnership between Young Money and its parent company Cash Money, with Universal Music controlling the distribution.
